The following materials are taken from the
CCC Confer taining page. They
are a summary of the various types of pop-up blockers and what to do about
them:
Pop-up blockers may prevent certain media from playing, or the virtual
classroom in Blackboard, for example, from working correctly. If you
suspect a pop-up blocker is causing a problem, here is how to find out if
you have one installed and how to disable it.
It is also possible (even likely) that you may have more than one
installed. If this is the case, ALL pop-up blockers must be temporarily
disabled.
A good way to test if a user has pop-up blocked is to go to a website
that normally has pop-up ads such as
www.nyt.com or www.cnn.com
Also, if you are not able to locate the pop-up blocker, try holding down
the Control Key when logging in. For some (not all) pop-up blockers, the
Control key is a hotkey used to allow pop-ups from a certain site.
Checking for pop-up blockers:
- Go to your internet browser
- On the menu bar click View > Toolbars > If you
have browser toolbars (AOL, Google, MSN, etc.) they will be listed.
If there is a check mark next to the toolbar name it indicates that
the toolbar is visible on your browser page. If not, click to place
a check mark next to the toolbar name to make it visible (you can
un-check later if you do not want to view the toolbar). Listed below
are the most popular pop-up blockers and how to manage them from the
toolbars.
- If you did not find any toolbars listed, click Tools
on the menu bar: If you have blockers, you will see Pop-up
blocker listed and a sub-menu to turn on or turn off (the wording
may vary based on your browser). The name of blocker is usually not
listed here – this can happen when things download that you are not
aware of!
- AOL Instant Messenger and
My Web Search have embedded pop-up blockers.
